Salisbury Area Attractions
  • Salisbury Zoo
Founded by the City of Salisbury, Maryland to further animal conservation and environmental awareness, the Salisbury Zoo provides naturalistic habitats for almost 400 mammals, birds, and reptiles native to North, Central and South America. It is regarded as one of the best small zoos in the country and is the only zoo in Maryland to gain a number-one rating from the U.S. Humane Society. The zoo's major exhibits include spectacled bears, monkeys, bison, jaguars, Bald Eagles, and one of the nation's finest waterfowl collections.

  • Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art
The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art is the most comprehensive collection of wildfowl carving in the world. The museum invites you to explore this unique, indigenous North American art form, from antique working decoys to internationally acclaimed comtemporary sculpture and painting.

  • Newtown Historic District
The Newtown Historic District, established in 1975, is a community of historic homes, many of the Victorian era. Newtown's quiet streets and peaceful pace belie its setting, right in the heart of Salisbury. The homes are the highlight of the neighborhood. Because Newtown is an historic district, the integrity and old-time charm of the neighborhood has been preserved, and the beautiful architecture - Victorian, Federal and Colonial - will remain for generations to come. Newtown hosts two historic landmarks, the Poplar Hill Mansion and the Chipman Cultural Center, as well as private homes on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Poplar Hill Mansion
The Poplar Hill Mansion, at 117 Elizabeth Street, was built circa 1805. The mansion is an excellent example of 18th century country Georgian architecture and its symmetrical approach to design. Much of the hardware, windowpanes, and intricate woodwork is original to the home, including the heart of pine floors. The facility may be reserved for a special function, and special tours are available. Hours: Sundays from 1-4pm For More Information: Call (410) 749-1776

  • Chipman Cultural Center
Located on broad and Ellen Streets, the stately Chipman Cultural Center recalls its past life as what is believed to be the first African-American church and school on the Eastern Shore. Today, thanks to restorations completed in 1994, the Center is a museum and community center, playing host to cultural events and available for private functions. For More Information: Call (410) 860-9290

  • Pemberton Hall
One of the earliest dated brick gambrel roofed houses in Maryland, Pemberton Hall is a typical mid-eighteenth century Eastern Shore plantation house of its class. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is currently under restoration but still open to visitors.
